These woodblocks and etchings were inspired by the ‘Tree of Life’, prayer scrolls and ancient bardic writing. I came upon the word talisman; which, for the modern soul can carry the connotation of a lucky charm. I hesitate to use it for that reason, but its meaning is much more pervasive than that, as it is we who have lost the connection. A talisman is an image that houses a spirit with the potential to draw one’s consciousness deeper. The talisman is rooted in ancient mystery, not thought to be the product of human skill: a specific art form tied to mythologies, religious ritual, prayer and practices. An astutely psychological form of art, it functions as the expeller and exciter of demons, of devils, of colorful beasts and angels. The talisman is a most ancient form of art. A talisman is thought to be the object of magical properties with the power to impart this magic to persons who carry and wear it.
